چکیده

WMAP’s detection of high electron-scattering optical depth τe suggests substantial star formation at high redshift z ∼ 17±5. On the other hand, the recovered σ8 ∼ 0.84± 0.04 disfavors a cluster Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) origin for the observed small-scaleCMB fluctuation excess, which generally requires σ8 ∼ 1.1. Here we consider the effects of high-redshift star formation on the CMB. We derive a fairly model-independent relation between τe and the number of ionizing photons emitted per baryon Nγ , and use this to calibrate the amount of high-redshift supernova activity. The resulting supernova remnants Compton cool against the CMB creating a Compton-y distortion y ∼ few× 10 within observational bounds. However they also create small-scale SZ fluctuations, which could be comparable with SZ fluctuations from unresolved galaxy clusters. This raises the exciting possibility that we have already detected signatures of the first stars not just once, but twice, in the CMB.

Kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect from galaxy cluster rotation

We show how the temperature and the polarisation of the cosmic microwave background are affected by bulk rotation of clusters of galaxies owing to the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. The main effects of rotation are (i) a shift of the position of the peak of the temperature fluctuation relative to the center of the cluster by a few percent of the core radius and (ii) a tilt of the direction o...

Sunyaev-Zeldovich Fluctuations from Spatial Correlations between Clusters of Galaxies.

We present angular power spectra of the cosmic microwave background radiation anisotropy due to fluctuations of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect through clusters of galaxies. A contribution from the correlation among clusters, which has been neglected in previous analyses, is especially focused on. Employing the evolving linear bias factor based on the Press-Schechter formalism, we find that t...

The Sunyaev - Zeldovich Effect

During passage through a cluster of galaxies some of the photons of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation are scattered by electrons in the hot intracluster (IC) gas. The scattering slightly modifies the incident Planck spectrum, imprinting on it a unique spectral signature that was first described by Sunyaev & Zeldovich (1972). [The impact of hypothetical hot intergalactic gas on the...

Relativistic Corrections to the Sunyaev-zeldovich Effect for Clusters of Galaxies. v. Effect of the Motion of the Observer

We extend the formalism of the relativistic thermal and kinematical SunyaevZeldovich effects to the observer’s system (the Solar System) moving with a velocity ~ βS ≡ ~vS/c with respect to the cosmic microwave background radiation. We confirm the results recently obtained by Chluba, Huetsi, and Sunyaev in the lowest order of the observer’s velocity βS. We give a more general analytic expression...

Basic Features of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich Effects Relevant to the CCAT

We discuss various aspects of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effects relevant to the CCAT. We review the frequency spectrum, make predictions for signal levels and angular sizes from various kinds of objects, and discuss the expected confusion levels. 1 Frequency Spectrum The thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) effect consists of a non-thermal distortion of the spectrum of the CMB by Compton scattering thro...
